SECP to Launch Nationwide Financial Literacy Campaign
The Securities and Exchange Commission of Pakistan (SECP) is targeting 2.5 million capital market investors through a nationwide financial literacy campaign aimed particularly at young people and expanding participation in financial markets beyond traditional investor centres.
The initiative was discussed at a meeting of the policy board of the Institute of Financial Markets, chaired by SECP Chairman Dr. Kabir Sidhu. The board approved relocating the institute to Islamabad, while its regional office in Karachi will continue operating.
Sidhu said providing financial literacy to Pakistan’s large young population was a national priority and that greater participation in the stock market would allow young people to become stakeholders in the country’s economic development.
Under the initiative, the Institute of Financial Markets will launch a nationwide financial literacy campaign, including training for students at schools and universities. It will also introduce free online courses on capital markets to make basic investment education more widely accessible.
The institute also plans to introduce professional certification programs for the financial sector, aimed at developing skills and creating employment opportunities as Pakistan’s capital markets expand.
SECP Commissioner Ali Farid Khawaja said the regulator wants to broaden the geographical base of investors and take capital market participation across the country, stressing that the Pakistan Stock Exchange should no longer remain concentrated in Karachi.
