Samsung Unveils 400-Layer AI Memory With 58% Higher Density

Samsung Electronics introduced a new generation of artificial intelligence memory technology on Tuesday as it looks to strengthen its chipmaking position in the rapidly growing AI market.

The world’s largest memory chip manufacturer presented its V10 Bonding V-NAND, also known as BV-NAND, prototype at this year’s Future of Memory and Storage conference in Santa Clara, California.

The prototype features more than 400 layers and uses a new wafer-bonding architecture designed to increase storage density and improve performance.

AI Growth Increases Demand for NAND Memory

Demand for high-capacity NAND memory has increased as AI workloads have expanded beyond training large language models to generating answers for users.

NAND flash memory stores data such as photos, videos and applications in devices including smartphones.

Samsung said its BV-NAND technology offers about 58% greater memory density than its previous V9 NAND.

The company also said the technology improves read, write and input/output performance. These upgrades aim to support AI systems that require higher-capacity and more power-efficient storage.

Samsung Reveals zHBM and zNAND-O Concepts

Samsung also displayed concept models of what it described as the industry’s first zHBM and zNAND-O architectures.

The technologies form part of Samsung’s vision for next-generation 3D memory, which stacks memory cells vertically to store more data.

Conventional high-bandwidth memory sits beside AI processors. In contrast, Samsung’s zHBM places memory vertically above AI accelerators.

This design reduces the distance that data must travel, increasing bandwidth while improving energy efficiency.

New Design Could Deliver 10 Times More Memory Density

Samsung said its wafer-bonding technology could provide more than 10 times the memory density of conventional HBM5 memory.

The company also expects the technology to triple energy efficiency and reduce thermal resistance by more than half.

Samsung Sees Strong Long-Term AI Demand

Some investors have raised concerns about long-term memory chip demand if demand from Chinese smartphone manufacturers weakens. However, analysts continue to point to exceptionally strong demand from the AI sector.

Samsung highlighted the strength of AI demand last week when it said long-term customer agreements could eventually represent 60% to 70% of its memory sales.

Citi analysts said in a note last month that inventories across the DRAM and NAND supply chains remained well below historical levels, despite concerns about weakening demand in end markets.
