The Punjab government has decided to introduce artificial intelligence education from Class I through Class XII as part of a major overhaul of the provincial school curriculum.
Punjab Chief Minister Maryam Nawaz Sharif directed officials to prepare an AI curriculum for students across all school grades. She also stressed the need to establish laboratories alongside the new subject.
Officials discussed the AI education plan during a special meeting on education reforms chaired by Maryam Nawaz. The proposal would introduce students to artificial intelligence from the earliest years of schooling and continue the subject through Class XII.
The government also plans to reduce the volume of school textbooks by 25% as part of its curriculum reforms. Officials said the change would support a shift from rote memorization toward concept-based learning.
The new textbooks will also carry QR codes that students can scan to access video lessons related to the relevant topics. The meeting also approved teacher training measures. The government plans to dedicate one day each week to teacher training, while authors of the new textbooks will train teachers in their use.
