The Punjab government held a stakeholder consultation on Monday to discuss the province’s transition to eco-friendly transport and plans to generate carbon credits under the Punjab Clean Air Program (PCAP).
The program plans to distribute around 120,000 electric two- and three-wheelers across Punjab through affordable financing. The initiative aims to reduce vehicle emissions while creating an opportunity to generate tradable carbon credits through verified emission reductions.
Participants discussed low-interest installment and financing models to make electric vehicles more accessible to commuters and commercial operators. They also discussed plans for charging stations, battery waste management and targeted access for women and low-income groups.
The consultation also focused on developing transparent systems to measure, report and verify emission reductions so the project can qualify for carbon credits under the internationally recognized Verified Carbon Standard managed by Verra.
Representatives from the Environment, Excise, Transport and Planning and Development departments, the Bank of Punjab, vehicle manufacturers, dealers, battery-swapping companies, financial institutions, civil society and consumers attended the meeting.
The Punjab government said it would incorporate actionable feedback from the consultation into the project design documents and implementation procedures. The consultation forms part of PCAP’s broader efforts to reduce smog, vehicle emissions and other sources of air pollution across the province.
