The Punjab Environment Department has directed schools to introduce effective carpooling arrangements as part of measures to reduce smog and traffic-related emissions.
Director General (DG) Environment Abdullah Nayyar Sheikh instructed school administrations to facilitate carpooling for students, parents, and staff. Schools have also been asked to form groups for students traveling from the same routes or nearby areas.
According to the DG Environment, reducing traffic congestion and vehicle emissions during morning hours is necessary to protect Lahore from smog. He said unnecessary vehicle trips must be reduced to improve air quality.
School administrations have also been directed to provide suitable travel facilities for students and parents while ensuring that the carpooling arrangements do not place any additional financial burden on them.
The Environment Department has also recommended that the School Education Department take effective steps to promote the measure across schools.
