Pride and Prejudice trailer: Faithful to the story, romantic at heart

Emma Corrin as Elizabeth Bennet in

“It is a truth universally acknowledged, that a single man in possession of a good fortune, must be in want of a wife.”

Behold, fellow period drama lovers, the trailer for the much-anticipated Netflix adaptation of Jane Austen’s Pride and Prejudice is finally here.

Adapted for the screen by Dolly Alderton and directed by Euros Lyn, the six-part series stars Emma Corrin as Elizabeth Bennet, Jack Lowden as Mr. Darcy, and Olivia Colman as Mrs. Bennet. The other Bennet sisters are played by Hopey Parish (Mary), Hollie Avery (Kitty), Rhea Norwood (Lydia), and Freya Mavor (Jane). Daryl McCormack is Mr. Bingley, Jamie Demetriou plays Mr. Collins, and Louis Partridge is Mr. Wickham. Fiona Shaw plays the esteemed patroness Lady Catherine de Bourgh.

For those of us who cherish previous adaptations of the beloved Austen novel, we have high hopes for this six-part series. No pressure, Netflix. Though one can’t judge from the trailer alone, my initial impressions (as an Austen devotee) are that it looks faithful to the story, romantic at its heart, and the period drama treat that we’re all craving this cosy season.

Pride and Prejudice hits Netflix on Dec. 3.
