The Pakistan Meteorological Department has forecast below-normal rainfall across most parts of the country in August, warning that reduced rain and above-normal temperatures could increase pressure on agriculture and water resources.
According to the seasonal outlook, many areas of Punjab, Sindh and Balochistan are likely to receive less rainfall than usual. Some parts of northeastern Punjab, Kashmir and Khyber Pakhtunkhwa may also remain dry, while Gilgit-Baltistan is expected to receive near-normal rainfall.
The department said temperatures will likely stay above normal across Pakistan during the month, raising the risk of heat stress in the plains of Punjab, Sindh and Balochistan.
It warned that the rainfall deficit could affect Kharif crops and increase irrigation needs, especially in Punjab and Sindh. Despite the overall dry outlook, the risk of flash floods will remain in hilly areas, while urban flooding may still occur during intense rain spells.
The forecast also warned of possible glacier melt, landslides, avalanches and sudden flooding in northern areas. Strong winds, dust storms, thunderstorms and hail may also damage standing crops in vulnerable regions.
The department further cautioned that dengue risks may continue in urban areas, especially in low-lying and flood-prone localities.
For the August to October period, the PMD expects below-normal rainfall across most of the country, with near-normal to above-normal rain in parts of Gilgit-Baltistan, northern Khyber Pakhtunkhwa and Kashmir. Above-normal temperatures are also likely nationwide during the period.
