A nine-member mountaineering team from Khyber Pakhtunkhwa (KP) has successfully summited the 6,050-meter Thalo Zom peak in the Hindu Kush mountain range.
According to the KP Culture and Tourism Authority, the team began the expedition on July 9 and reached the summit on July 17 after eight days of climbing.
The climbers hoisted Pakistan’s national flag at the summit after completing the final stage of the ascent in nearly eight hours.
During the expedition, the team traveled through the mountainous regions of Kamrat and Chitral, crossing glaciers, deep crevasses, and steep ice-covered sections. Ice screws were installed at critical points to ensure a safer climb.
Thalo Zom is considered one of the most technically difficult and least-climbed peaks in the Hindu Kush because of its rugged terrain and challenging conditions.
The expedition included Ruhullah, Umar Khan, Intikhab Khan, Nauman Sami, Izzatullah Shah, Saeed Akhtar, Naeem Khan, Fawad Khan, and Rawaz Ali, who represented different districts of Khyber Pakhtunkhwa.
The team thanked the KP Culture and Tourism Authority for providing technical assistance, saying the support played an important role in the expedition’s success.
Officials said the achievement would help promote technical mountaineering and adventure tourism in the province and encourage more climbing expeditions in the future.
Thalo Zom was first summited by an Australian expedition in 1971, while an Italian team completed another successful ascent in 2019.
