Pakistan’s Nationwide 5G Rollout to Take Another 2 Years

Pakistan’s nationwide rollout of 5G services could take another two years, the government told the National Assembly on Friday, as lawmakers raised concerns over slow internet speeds, poor coverage and the reliability of existing mobile networks.

During Question Hour, Parliamentary Secretary for Information Technology Sabeen Ghouri said 5G services were available in 24 cities and that work was underway to improve connectivity before expanding coverage to additional areas.

Pakistan Peoples Party (PPP) MNA Aseefa Bhutto-Zardari highlighted complaints about sluggish 4G and 5G services in Nawabshah and other parts of the country, calling for a coordinated plan to improve internet speeds and address consumer concerns.

The discussion took an awkward turn when Abdul Qadir Patel, who was presiding over the session, asked Ghouri what 5G stood for. She appeared unable to recall the meaning at the time, prompting Aseefa to suggest that her colleagues explain it to her.

Jamiat Ulema-e-Islam-Fazl (JUI-F) MNA Noor Alam questioned why consumers were being charged for 5G when the service was not consistently available in practice. Patel questioned the need to introduce the new technology while existing services remained unreliable, asking whether 4G had “died” to justify the arrival of its successor.
