The scholarship also includes payments toward health, accident, and personal liability insurance. DAAD additionally provides a travel allowance unless another organization or the applicant’s home country already covers the travel costs.

Under certain circumstances, scholarship holders may also qualify for additional support, including a monthly rent subsidy and an allowance for accompanying family members.

At the University of Freiburg, DAAD EPOS recipients do not have to pay the €1,500 study fee per semester charged to non-EU students.

Who Can Apply

The scholarship is intended for young professionals from eligible developing and newly industrialised countries. Pakistan is among the countries covered under the DAAD EPOS framework.

Applicants must hold an academic degree that is no more than six years old at the time of application.

They must also have at least two years of relevant professional experience after completing their Bachelor’s degree. Internships and voluntary work do not count toward this requirement.

The University of Freiburg notes that employment in academic teaching or research normally does not count as relevant professional experience for this scholarship, except in very limited cases.

Academic Requirements

Applicants need an above-average academic record and should rank within the upper third of their graduating class for the DAAD EPOS selection process.

For admission to the MSc Environmental Governance program, applicants generally need a Bachelor’s degree in a relevant field with a grade equivalent to 2.5 or better under the German grading system.

Relevant backgrounds include Environmental Management, Environmental Sciences, Agriculture, Forestry, Geography, Political Science, Sociology, Law, Economics, Development Studies, Natural Resource Management, and other related disciplines.

English Language Requirements

Test / Qualification Minimum Requirement
IELTS Academic Band 7.0
PTE Academic 76
Cambridge English C1 level
TOEFL iBT 95 for tests taken before 2026
TOEFL from 2026 onward Accepted under the revised TOEFL scoring scale used by the university

Documents Required

Applicants need to prepare a complete set of documents for both admission to the MSc Environmental Governance program and consideration for the DAAD EPOS Scholarship.

Required materials include the DAAD and MEG application forms, a motivation letter, CV, Bachelor’s degree certificate, academic transcript, proof of relevant professional experience, and an accepted English-language certificate.

Applicants must also submit the signed DAAD checklist and other supporting documents requested by the University of Freiburg.

Two Recommendation Letters Required

Candidates need two recommendation letters. One should come from the applicant’s current employer, while the other should come from an academic teacher or supervisor.

Applicants must not submit these recommendation letters themselves. The referees must send the letters directly to the MSc Environmental Governance program by the application deadline.

How to Apply

Applicants must prepare all required application documents and combine or compress them into one PDF file. They must then email the complete application to the MSc Environmental Governance program at the University of Freiburg.

The scholarship and university applications are linked, meaning applicants submit the required documents for both admission and scholarship consideration together.

The two referees must send their recommendation letters separately and directly to the program. Incomplete applications will not enter the selection process.

The University of Freiburg first evaluates applications and selects suitable candidates. It then forwards its nominations to DAAD, which reviews the nominations and makes the final scholarship decision.
