Researchers from Government College University (GCU) Lahore and the Lahore University of Management Sciences (LUMS) have secured a £10,000 grant from the UK’s Royal Society of Chemistry (RSC) to establish Pakistan’s first Sustainable Chemistry Laboratory.
The project was selected as one of only 23 initiatives worldwide under the RSC’s 2026 Sustainable Laboratories Grants program.
The initiative is being led by Dr. Muhammad Altaf, Associate Professor at GCU’s Institute of Chemical Sciences, and Hasan Yaqoob, a doctoral researcher at LUMS.
The proposed laboratory will introduce closed-loop solvent recovery and micro-distillation systems, allowing chemicals used in experiments to be purified and reused rather than discarded. The facility will also encourage the use of greener solvents in undergraduate laboratory teaching.
As part of the project, laboratory staff will receive certified training focused on safety and sustainable laboratory practices.
Dr. Altaf said the initiative seeks to reduce the environmental impact and resource waste associated with conventional research laboratories. He added that the long-term objective is to develop an efficient and environmentally friendly laboratory model that can be adopted by universities and research institutions across Pakistan.
The project brings together researchers from GCU, LUMS, Queen Mary University of London, and the University of Education.
