Over 140 Govt School Buildings Declared Unsafe in Rawalpindi

The Punjab Communication and Works (C&W) Department has declared buildings at 143 government schools in Rawalpindi district fully or partially unsafe following a province-wide safety inspection.

The inspections were ordered by the Punjab government after the collapse of a private school building in Peshawar. As part of the exercise, the District Education Authority (DEA) Rawalpindi formed 47 teams to assess the structural condition of schools across the district.

According to the findings, between 20% and 80% of the structures at the 143 affected schools are in deteriorating condition, posing safety risks to students and staff.

Government Pahlavi High School for Boys, located near Barani University in Rawalpindi city, was among the worst-affected institutions.

Its building was declared completely unsafe and immediately evacuated, with students temporarily relocated to Zarai Farm School.

DEA Rawalpindi CEO Yasin Baloch said most of the affected schools have partially damaged structures, including classrooms, blocks, and boundary walls.

He said emergency repairs have begun in less severely affected buildings, while proposals for the reconstruction of more dangerous structures have been submitted to the Punjab government. Reconstruction work will begin once the required funds are released.

Baloch added that unsafe sections have been vacated, with classes continuing in alternative spaces.

Meanwhile, authorities have also launched safety inspections of private schools across Rawalpindi under provincial government directives. The 47 inspection teams are expected to submit their reports this week.
