Opening Date Confirmed for New Underpass in Islamabad

The Capital Development Authority will construct the Kashmir Chowk underpass at a cost of Rs1.4 billion, with the project targeted for completion within a month, a CDA spokesperson told APP on Tuesday.

The underpass has been planned to ease traffic congestion at Kashmir Chowk, where around 107,000 vehicles pass through the junction every day, causing delays especially during peak hours.

Under the project, separate underpasses will be built for traffic coming from the Serena side and for vehicles travelling from Faizabad towards Murree.

Four new slip roads will also be constructed to improve traffic flow around the junction.

The spokesperson said around five acres of land will be included in the project for road expansion and related infrastructure.

The scheme will also be linked with the planned expansion of lanes on the Islamabad Expressway.

According to the CDA, the project cost has been reduced from an initial estimate of Rs1.6 billion to Rs1.4 billion through cost optimisation and planning.

Once the project is integrated with planned road network improvements, travel time between Islamabad and Rawalpindi is expected to come down to around 16 to 18 minutes.
