PTA Reports 88% Overall Blocking Rate in Social Media Content
The Pakistan Telecommunication Authority (PTA) has reported that it sent 1,789,022 URLs to relevant social media platforms for action, out of which 1,577,936 URLs were blocked, showing an overall blocking rate of 88.20 percent.
The data covers multiple platforms and represents the URL blocking status maintained by PTA in its database.
The PTA document shows that 83,740 URLs remained under review, while 127,346 URLs were rejected. The authority maintains a database of approximately 1.5 million URLs with updated blocking status and said the URLs are frequently verified and re-verified to pursue accessible URLs, escalate cases where required, and update the database.
Platform-wise, the document shows that PTA processed 311,699 URLs for Facebook, blocking 244,981, while 58,729 Instagram URLs were processed and 46,704 blocked. For Twitter, 162,878 URLs were processed and 78,871 blocked, whereas on YouTube, 76,153 URLs were processed and 66,514 blocked. TikTok accounted for 208,268 processed URLs, of which 184,686 were blocked.
The data further shows that 900,222 URLs categorised under Others/Misc were processed, with 891,772 blocked, while 55,414 WhatsApp URLs were processed and 50,165 blocked. PTA has stated that complaints and reported online content are examined under the applicable legal framework and that, where legally authorised, regulatory and technical measures are taken, including approaching relevant platforms or service providers for action against unlawful content.
