Microsoft Just Unveiled Two New Surface Devices With Snapdragon Chip and AI
Microsoft has introduced the second-generation Surface Pro 12-inch and Surface Laptop 13-inch, both powered by Qualcomm’s Snapdragon X2 Plus processor. The new devices focus on portable Windows-on-ARM computing and on-device AI, while Microsoft has also introduced new software and accessories alongside them.
Microsoft Surface Pro 12-Inch Gets a New Design
The Surface Pro 12-inch (2nd edition) is a Windows-on-ARM tablet with a 12-inch PixelSense LCD featuring a 2,196 × 1,464 resolution, 3:2 aspect ratio, and 90Hz refresh rate.
The display supports touch input and the optional Surface Slim Pen, which can detect 4,096 levels of pressure. Microsoft has also introduced Ink Canvas, an AI-powered pen-focused app that can convert sketches into text.
The tablet weighs 686g and measures 7.8mm thick. It comes in Platinum, Black and Violet.
Snapdragon X2 Plus Brings More AI Power
Microsoft has equipped the Surface Pro 12-inch with a passively cooled Snapdragon X2 Plus featuring a six-core CPU and an 80 TOPS NPU for on-device AI. Configurations include 16GB or 24GB RAM and 256GB or 512GB UFS storage.
Microsoft claims the new processor delivers 17% faster Office productivity, 18% better battery efficiency, 60% faster graphics, and 95% faster local AI inferencing compared with the previous Surface Pro 12-inch.
The Surface Laptop 13-inch (2nd edition) also uses the Snapdragon X2 Plus and comes with configurations ranging from 16GB/256GB to 24GB/512GB.
Surface Laptop 13-Inch Focuses on Portability
The Surface Laptop 13-inch features an aluminium body, a color-matched keyboard and a next-generation haptic trackpad.
Its 13-inch PixelSense LCD has a 1,920 × 1,280 resolution, 3:2 aspect ratio, 60Hz refresh rate, and up to 500 nits of brightness. The touchscreen uses strengthened glass for protection.
The laptop weighs 1,225g and measures 17.5mm thick when closed.
Cameras and Connectivity
The Surface Pro 12-inch includes a 10MP rear camera and a 1080p Surface Studio Camera on the front.
The Surface Laptop 13-inch also features a 1080p Surface Studio Camera.
The Surface Pro has two USB-C USB 3.2 ports and can drive two 4K 60Hz external displays through DisplayPort 1.4a. It also supports Wi-Fi 7 and Bluetooth 5.4.
The Surface Laptop includes two USB-C USB 3.2 ports, one USB-A USB 3.2 port, and a 3.5mm headphone jack.
Battery Life and Pricing
The Surface Pro 12-inch offers up to 15.5 hours of video playback or up to 11.5 hours of active web usage. It supports charging at up to 45W.
The tablet starts at $1,150. The 16GB/512GB model costs $1,250, while the 24GB/512GB version costs $1,450.
The Surface Laptop 13-inch promises up to 22.5 hours of video playback and comes with a 45W USB-C charger. Pricing starts at $1,200 for the 16GB/256GB model and reaches $1,500 for the 24GB/512GB configuration.
