McGill University Canada Opens Fully Funded MSc and PhD Scholarships for Pakistanis
McGill University in Canada is offering fully funded MSc and PhD research opportunities for students interested in radar remote sensing and Arctic sea ice research.
The positions are available through the university’s Polar Remote Sensing Research Group for the Fall 2027 intake.
Pakistani students are eligible to apply, although Canadian citizens and permanent residents will receive preference for the MSc position.
Funding for both positions will come through a combination of an award, research assistantship, and teaching assistantship. Selected students may also take part in Arctic field campaigns during their studies.

McGill University Arctic Sea Ice Scholarships 2027
The research focuses on the use of radar remote sensing to study Arctic sea ice. Students will work with satellite observations and Synthetic Aperture Radar data while developing research experience in polar remote sensing.
The MSc position focuses on SAR-based characterization of sea ice in the Canadian Arctic. The PhD project goes further into multi-frequency SAR data, radar backscatter, polarimetry, large raster datasets, cloud-based platforms, and machine learning.
Eligibility for MSc Position
Applicants for the MSc position should hold a bachelor’s degree in geography, environmental science, physics, engineering, computer science, or a closely related field.
McGill is looking for candidates with advanced programming skills and an interest in Arctic research. A background in remote sensing, GIS, or geophysics can strengthen an application.
Experience with satellite imagery is also useful. Previous radar experience may help, but it is not required for the MSc position.
Canadian citizens and permanent residents will receive preference. However, eligible international students, including Pakistanis, can still apply.
Eligibility for PhD Position
PhD applicants should hold an MSc in remote sensing, geography, physics, engineering, or a related field.
Candidates need advanced programming skills and hands-on experience with radar data. They should also understand radar backscatter and polarimetry.
Strong scientific writing skills are important for the PhD position. Applicants with a first-author research publication or a manuscript in preparation may have an advantage.
The research may also involve machine learning, cloud-based platforms, and large satellite datasets.
What the Funding Covers
Both positions are fully funded through a combination of scholarship support, research assistantship funding, and teaching assistantship funding.
The research group will also provide students with opportunities to build practical experience in polar remote sensing.
Selected candidates may participate in Arctic field campaigns, giving them direct exposure to field-based sea ice research alongside their academic work.
How to Apply
Interested students should contact Dr. Mallik Mahmud before submitting their formal application to McGill University.
Applicants should briefly explain their previous academic or research work and describe their research interests in the email.
They should also attach a CV and an unofficial academic transcript. Contacting the supervisor early can help candidates discuss their research interests and check whether their background fits the available project.
Application Deadline
The graduate application deadline for McGill University’s Geography Department is January 15, 2027. Students interested in either the MSc or PhD opportunity should contact the research group early and complete their formal application before the deadline.
