‘Maxxing’ Named Word of the Year for 2026
In a decision that will surprise no one who has spent five minutes online lately, “maxxing” was named Dictionary.com’s word of the year for 2026 on Sunday.
The suffix has attached itself to almost everything these days — sleep, protein, gym and, in a somewhat alarming case, lethality — and it was only a matter of time before it went mainstream.
A lot of people attribute maxxing’s popularity to the highly controversial influencer Clavicular, who was charged with raping a 17-year-old girl last month.
He used to promote “looksmaxxing”, an online subculture focused on maximising physical attractiveness. But the term itself is older than its current ubiquity suggests, dating back to the 1990s when gamers used to “min-max” character traits.
Where it once belonged to niche communities, it now clings to everything: people are sleepmaxxing, cosymaxxing, even tokenmaxxing the AI tools they use at work.
Other words on the 2026 shortlist include affordability, data centre, odyssey and unc.
Affordability and data centre made the list as the former is a global concern, and the latter is fast becoming one. Dictionary.com credited Odyssey to director Christopher Nolan, whose film The Odyssey crossed the $1 billion mark at the global box office in August. As for unc, it is the new “OK Boomer” for Gen Zs and Alphas.
The Pakistani Angle
The rise of “maxxing” has not gone unnoticed in Pakistan, where English-fluent Gen Z users on TikTok, Instagram and X have readily adopted terms like “looksmaxxing” and “sleepmaxxing”.
The trend mirrors the country’s growing digital-savvy youth culture, even as local regulators continue to debate content moderation and social media safety for younger audiences a conversation that has only intensified in recent months.
