LESCO Accused of Overbilling, Bribery and Illegal Power Cuts

Punjab Assembly Speaker Malik Muhammad Ahmad Khan has called for an investigation into Lahore Electric Supply Company (LESCO) after a treasury member raised serious allegations of corruption, overbilling, prolonged power outages and misconduct in Chunian’s Allahabad area.

The issue was raised through an adjournment motion submitted by treasury member Ahsan Raza Khan.

The motion alleged that LESCO officials demanded Rs. 150,000 from a local resident for removing high-tension wires but failed to complete the work and later resorted to pressure tactics.

It also accused officials of filing false electricity theft cases against consumers, which were later contradicted by police video evidence, and disconnecting power to their homes.

The motion further cited complaints of extortion for transformer repairs, delays in meter replacements and daily load shedding of up to 18 hours.

Ahsan Raza Khan alleged that the problems were linked to a wider corruption network extending from linemen to senior officials.

Speaking during an informal media interaction at Governor House, the Punjab Assembly speaker also criticized recent LESCO raids in Kasur, describing them as illegal.

He referred to complaints of harassment, privacy violations and collective power disconnections in which entire villages were allegedly penalized over line losses.

The speaker also raised concerns about flood-affected residents facing excessive billing and demands for bribes to get their bills corrected.

He said he had already taken up the matter with Federal Power Minister Awais Leghari and would also raise it with Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif.

Malik Muhammad Ahmad Khan criticized utility officials for remaining confined to air-conditioned offices and said collective punishment over line losses or individual electricity theft was unlawful.
