Khyber Pakhtunkhwa Chief Minister Muhammad Sohail Afridi has formally inaugurated new hybrid buses added to the Peshawar BRT fleet, along with a dedicated Pink Bus Service for women.
The ceremony was attended by Advisor to the Chief Minister on Finance Muzammil Aslam, Special Assistant to the Chief Minister for Transport and Mass Transit Sami Ullah Khan, Secretary Transport and Mass Transit Muhammad Zubair, KP Urban Mobility Authority Managing Director Iftikhar Ahmed, TransPeshawar Chief Executive Officer Dr Syed Murtaza Asghar Bukhari, and others.
During the briefing, Dr Syed Murtaza Asghar Bukhari shared details of the project’s performance over the past six years, services provided to citizens, major achievements and plans.
Chief Minister Afridi highlighted the importance of the new buses, the Pink Bus Service, the Solar Project and the Hayatabad Depot, and reaffirmed the government’s commitment to providing modern, safe, reliable and environment-friendly transport.
With the addition of the new hybrid buses, the Peshawar BRT fleet will increase from 244 to 296 buses.
Officials said the expanded fleet will improve service frequency on existing routes, reduce waiting times for passengers and help extend the BRT network to new areas.
A dedicated Pink Bus Service comprising five buses was also launched for women to provide a safe, comfortable and dignified travel option.
The service will operate on the 21-kilometre route from Gulbahar Chowk to Karkhano Market, Monday to Friday, during morning, noon and evening peak hours.
The 1-megawatt Solar Project at Chamkani Depot was also inaugurated during the event.
Officials said the project is expected to generate around 1.38 to 1.44 million units of electricity annually, save about Rs74.4 million each year and reduce carbon dioxide emissions by approximately 469 tonnes annually.
Another key component of the ceremony was the inauguration of the Mall of Hayatabad BRT Depot.
The depot will provide essential infrastructure for the growing BRT fleet and network, including bus parking, inspection and workshop facilities, a fuel station, an automatic bus washing plant, and accommodation and support facilities for drivers and staff.
