The federal government told a parliamentary committee on Wednesday that Karachi’s long-delayed K-IV water supply project requires another Rs. 70 billion to reach completion, despite spending Rs. 86 billion on the scheme so far.
The National Assembly Standing Committee on Water Resources reviewed the project’s progress during a meeting, where Minister for Water Resources Moeen Wattoo said about 40 percent of the work has been completed. He added that water distribution falls under the jurisdiction of the Sindh government.
The committee discussed a calling attention notice moved by MNA Aminul Haque regarding delays in the project.
WAPDA Chairman Lt. Gen. (Retd.) Sajjad Ghani told lawmakers that the project had previously faced delays because of funding shortages but said the Sindh government has now released its share of Rs. 7.70 billion.
During the meeting, MNA Syed Waseem Hussain raised concerns over Karachi’s ongoing water crisis, saying residents continue to rely on private water tankers because of the city’s water shortages. He said the tanker mafia remains active and that households are paying up to Rs. 8,000 for a single water tanker.
The K IV project is considered one of Karachi’s largest water supply initiatives and is expected to improve water availability for the city’s growing population once completed.
