Karachi University Replaces Temporary VC With Another Temporary VC

The University of Karachi is once again set to operate under an interim arrangement as its acting head leaves for a 20-day foreign trip at the start of admissions for the 2027 academic session.

Professor Dr. Haris Shoaib, Dean of the Faculty of Pharmacy, has been assigned responsibility for the university’s day-to-day affairs while NED University Vice Chancellor Dr. Muhammad Tufail Ahmed travels to the United States, Canada and Sri Lanka for academic visits.

Dr. Tufail, who also holds additional charge of the University of Karachi, was given the responsibility in the last week of July.

Officials at the University of Karachi Registrar’s Office said the no-objection certificate for his foreign visits has been issued. At NED University, Pro-Vice Chancellor Dr. Noman Ahmed has been given temporary charge during his absence.

The latest trip will be Dr. Tufail’s second overseas academic visit in roughly two months, leaving the 46,000-student university without a full-time or acting vice chancellor during an important stage of the academic calendar.

The Sindh government has yet to appoint a permanent vice chancellor for the university. A summary containing the names of three candidates for the post has already reached the Chief Minister’s House, but no further progress has been made.

The leadership change comes as admissions for the 2027 academic session are already underway.

Thousands of candidates are scheduled to appear in entry tests for different disciplines on October 11, while open-merit admissions are also set to begin the same day.

With Dr. Tufail abroad, routine administrative matters will be handled by a senior dean during the admissions process.

Entry tests are among the university’s major annual academic events and usually involve oversight from senior leadership, making the absence of a vice chancellor particularly notable during this period.
