Karachi to Recycle Wastewater for Factories
The Karachi Industrial Water Park (TP-1) has been inaugurated to treat municipal wastewater for industrial use, helping conserve freshwater for the city’s residents.
The project is designed to provide up to 100 million gallons per day (MGD) of recycled water once both phases are completed.
Under Phase I, industries will receive 35 MGD of treated wastewater. Phase II will add another 65 MGD, with completion targeted within six months. Groundbreaking for the second phase is taking place alongside the inauguration.
Upon completion, TP-1 is expected to supply up to 100 MGD of treated industrial process water by 2027, reducing businesses’ dependence on freshwater sources.
By replacing freshwater with recycled water for industrial purposes, the project aims to make more water available for drinking and household use. It will also turn municipal wastewater into a usable resource rather than allowing it to go to waste.
The Sindh government is advancing the initiative in partnership with public and private sector stakeholders.
The water park forms part of a broader effort to improve Karachi’s long-term water security, support sustainable urban development and protect the environment. The recycled supply is intended for industrial use, not drinking water.
