Karachi to Get First-Ever Pedestrian-Only Food Street

Karachi’s historic Burns Road could become a pedestrian-only food street under a proposed rehabilitation plan aimed at improving public facilities while preserving its traditional character.

Architect Yasmeen Lari presented the proposed model during a meeting chaired by Sindh Chief Secretary Asif Hyder Shah.

The discussion focused on restoring Burns Road and its adjoining areas, improving pedestrian access, and making the food street more organized.

The proposal includes a pedestrian-only zone, upgraded footpaths, and improvements to surrounding streets. These changes are intended to make the area easier to navigate for visitors and residents while providing a better environment for local businesses.

Shah emphasized that development must protect Burns Road’s historical and cultural significance. He said improvements to its appearance and infrastructure should not come at the expense of the traditional atmosphere that defines the neighborhood.

According to the chief secretary, local residents and business representatives have been consulted on the proposal. Karachi’s mayor and the relevant municipal town administrations also support the plan.

The rehabilitation effort seeks to balance heritage conservation with better public amenities at one of the city’s best-known food destinations.

An implementation timeline and details of the proposed vehicle restrictions have not yet been announced.
