Imported Wheat Ship Arrives in Karachi
A ship carrying around 51,000 metric tons of imported wheat docked at Karachi Port on Wednesday, with a second wheat cargo due next week as the government works to bring flour prices under control.
According to the Karachi Port Trust (KPT), the geared vessel MV Gokova M was allocated Berths 16 and 17 and arrived at the port at 12:25 pm on October 28.
Another vessel, MV Great Rainbow, is expected to arrive on November 3. KPT said the two ships together carry a declared wheat cargo of over 110,000 metric tons.
Bulk Cargo Handled at KGTML
The wheat is being handled at Karachi Gateway Terminal Multipurpose Limited (KGTML). KPT said this reinforces the port’s role in supporting the country’s essential commodity imports and keeping cargo operations efficient.
Govt Says There Will Be No Shortage
The shipment comes days after Food Security Minister Rana Tanveer Hussain announced that the government will maintain wheat reserves of up to 6 million tons.
He said there will be no wheat shortage this year and that up to 550,000 metric tons could be imported based on provincial demand.
Hussain called the recent rise in wheat prices artificial and said prices should return to normal within days.
Last week, Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif raised the wheat support price by Rs. 1,000 to Rs. 4,500 per maund for 2027.
Separately, Deputy Prime Minister Ishaq Dar chaired a meeting of the Steering Committee on Wheat on Wednesday.
The committee reviewed grain availability across the country and import plans to keep supplies steady.
Dar directed the authorities to closely monitor the market and ensure that wheat supply stays adequate and atta prices move downward.
