A Chinese humanoid robot called Yansyn-X2 has attracted attention for its ability to cry on command and produce realistic tears during conversations.
The robot was recently demonstrated at the 2026 Inclusion Conference in Shanghai. In footage from the event, a demonstrator asks the robot if it can shed tears, and a single tear appears on its face seconds later.
Yansyn-X2 was developed by Ningbo-based Yanxi Technology and was originally introduced in April 2026. The company describes it as a bionic facial-expression robot designed for emotional interaction.
How the Robot Cries
The system uses AI to analyze conversational context and emotional tone. When it detects language associated with sadness or empathy, it triggers components beneath the robot’s silicone face to create an appropriate expression.
A separate microfluidic system then produces tears near the eyes. Reports describe the mechanism as using a miniature pump and precision fluid-control system to create a more natural-looking tear.
The robot does not actually experience emotions. Instead, the technology is part of work in affective computing, where machines analyze human emotions and respond in ways intended to make interactions feel more natural.
The current Yansyn-X2 is a static model rather than a fully walking humanoid. However, it can turn its head, track people, and move its arms and upper body. Yanxi Technology says future versions are expected to use bionic muscles instead of conventional servo motors to create smoother and more varied facial expressions.
The company says the technology could eventually be used in areas such as companionship robots, tourism, elderly care, and service applications.
Yansyn-X2 is part of a broader push to make humanoid robots more expressive and capable of responding to people in increasingly human-like ways.
