Googlebook Laptops Are Here, but Intel Models Have a Catch

Google’s new Googlebook laptops are starting to reach stores worldwide, offering a platform that combines Android technologies with some desktop foundations from ChromeOS.

The laptops run Googlebook OS, which can run Android apps natively rather than placing them inside a separate container.

Intel Models Have Some App Limitations

Google has confirmed that Googlebook models using Intel x86 processors may have compatibility issues with some Android apps.

Most Android apps were originally built for ARM-based processors used in smartphones. Google says 96.6% of more than 10,000 of the most-used Android apps work properly on Intel-based Googlebooks.

However, some more complex apps and games still require developer updates before they can run correctly on x86 hardware. Google has not published a list of the affected apps.

Three of the five Googlebook models available at launch use Intel processors, while the Dell and HP models use Qualcomm Snapdragon ARM chips.

Android 17 Is Required for Full Phone Integration

Several of Googlebook’s phone-to-laptop features require a smartphone running Android 17.

These include:

  • Browsing phone files from the laptop
  • Continuing tasks through Continue On
  • Synchronizing notifications
  • Streaming a phone’s screen and apps to the laptop

These features are not available with older Android versions.

Googlebook OS Combines Android and ChromeOS Technologies

Googlebook OS is built mainly on Android technology while borrowing desktop elements from ChromeOS.

This allows the machines to run native Android applications while offering a more traditional laptop experience.

Google is also emphasizing AI features, premium hardware, and long-term software support of up to 10 years.

Chromebooks Are Not Going Away

Google will continue supporting Chromebooks separately. Some newer Chromebook models may eventually receive an upgrade path to Googlebook OS, although Google has not provided details about which devices could qualify.

For users who want the full Googlebook experience, processor choice will matter for demanding Android applications and games, while Android 17 will be required to access the complete set of phone integration features.
