Master of Science in Chemistry Scholarship Benefits

The University of British Columbia provides a minimum annual funding package of CAD 30,000 to students enrolled in its Chemistry MSc program. The department generally renews this funding for two years, allowing eligible students to receive at least CAD 60,000 during the standard funding period, subject to satisfactory teaching and research performance.

Students receive financial support through a combination of university scholarships, external awards, research assistantships, teaching assistantships and graduate academic assistantships.

UBC also provides a Faculty of Science Master’s Tuition Award to all first-year Chemistry MSc students, including domestic and international candidates. The award covers an amount equivalent to the current domestic tuition fee, reducing the financial burden of graduate study.

International students can also qualify for the university’s International Tuition Award, which provides up to CAD 3,200 per year to eligible students in research-based graduate programs.

Tuition Fees and Additional Financial Assistance

UBC charges tuition fees for the Chemistry MSc program. Its published first-year tuition rates are approximately CAD 10,081.65 for international students and CAD 5,738.52 for domestic students.

The Faculty of Science Master’s Tuition Award covers an amount equivalent to domestic tuition during the first year. Eligible international students can also receive financial support through the International Tuition Award, depending on the university’s funding conditions.

Students must also pay additional university fees, which UBC estimates at approximately CAD 1,203.20 annually. These charges are separate from tuition and can include student services and other university-related expenses.

Eligibility Criteria for the UBC MSc Chemistry Scholarship

Applicants must hold a recognised bachelor’s degree in Chemistry or a closely related scientific discipline.

The university also considers candidates with suitable academic backgrounds in physics, biology, mathematics, and other relevant subjects.

UBC normally requires an overall academic average in the B+ range, equivalent to approximately 76% under its grading system. International applicants must meet the same academic standard through the equivalent grading system used by their previous universities.

For Pakistani candidates, UBC generally requires a recognised four-year bachelor’s degree or another eligible academic qualification with first-class or first-division standing. The university evaluates certain qualifications on a case-by-case basis according to its country-specific admission requirements.

Applicants must demonstrate strong academic preparation and an interest in graduate-level chemistry research. The department assesses previous academic performance, research experience, references, and the applicant’s proposed area of study.

English Language Requirements

International applicants whose previous universities did not primarily teach in English must provide results from an accepted English-language proficiency examination.

For the Chemistry MSc program, UBC requires an IELTS Academic overall score of 6.5, with at least 6.0 in Reading, Writing, Speaking and Listening.

Candidates submitting the Duolingo English Test must achieve an overall score of at least 125. The university also requires minimum component scores of 115 in Reading and Listening and 120 in Writing and Speaking.

For TOEFL iBT examinations taken before January 21, 2026, applicants must achieve an overall score of at least 92. The department requires minimum scores of 23 in Reading and Listening and 22 in Writing and Speaking.

For TOEFL iBT examinations taken on or after January 21, 2026, UBC uses the revised six-point scoring system. Candidates must achieve an overall score of 4.5, with at least 4.5 in Reading and Writing, 4.0 in Speaking, and 5.0 in Listening.

Required Documents

Applicants must prepare their academic records and supporting documents before submitting the online application.

UBC requires transcripts from all previous post-secondary institutions, degree certificates and three academic references. Applicants must provide their referees’ contact information through the university’s application system.

The Department of Chemistry also asks candidates to submit a two-page personal statement describing their academic background, interests and motivation for graduate study. Applicants must prepare a separate one-page research statement outlining their previous research experience or undergraduate research projects.

Candidates should also provide an updated curriculum vitae containing their educational qualifications, research experience, relevant academic achievements, and professional information.

How to Apply for the Master of Science in Chemistry Scholarship

Interested candidates must submit their applications through the University of British Columbia’s official graduate admissions portal.

Applicants should first visit the UBC Master of Science in Chemistry program page to review the admission requirements, funding opportunities, and application deadlines.

Candidates must create or use a UBC Campus-Wide Login account and complete the online graduate application for the September 2027 intake. They must provide their academic history, research interests, relevant test scores, and contact details for three referees.

Applicants should also review faculty research profiles and identify potential supervisors whose work matches their academic interests. The department encourages candidates to contact faculty members, although they do not need a supervisor’s commitment before applying.

After submitting the online application, candidates must upload their academic transcripts, personal statement, research statement, and other required documents. Referees must submit their recommendations through the university’s approved reference process.
