FlyDubai Pilot Wanted to Do 9/11 Style Attack in Israel

A Flydubai co-pilot allegedly planned to crash a passenger aircraft into a terminal at Israel’s Ben Gurion Airport in an attack inspired by 9/11, according to the UAE’s attorney general.

Authorities said Omani national Hamam al-Hammami attempted to seize control of a Dubai-to-Tel Aviv flight on September 30. The alleged plot was foiled after another pilot, crew members, and passengers intervened.

UAE Attorney General Hamad Saif al-Shamsi said investigators found that al-Hammami intended to target the airport’s passenger terminal to cause mass casualties. He allegedly attacked the flight’s captain with an emergency axe before being overpowered.

The aircraft was subsequently diverted to Tabuk, Saudi Arabia, where it landed safely.

According to prosecutors, al-Hammami had traveled on two earlier flights to Tel Aviv to familiarize himself with the route and airport before attempting the attack.

Authorities said he confessed to planning and acting alone. However, investigators are continuing to examine whether anyone assisted him.

Al-Hammami joined Flydubai in January 2026. The attorney general said he had met the airline’s professional and security requirements, and its hiring checks had not uncovered his alleged extremist views.

The latest statement provides official confirmation of the alleged airport target, following earlier reports about the attempted hijacking.
