Yemen Armed Forces Use Anthropic AI to Build Advanced Weapons

Yemen’s popular Ansar Allah recently used Anthropic’s Claude AI to develop guidance, navigation and control software for missiles and a guided rocket, according to Anthropic’s latest threat intelligence report.

Anthropic identified the Ansar Allah as a cell operating three weapons programs, including a guided rocket, a multi-stage ballistic missile with a stated range goal of more than 2,000 kilometers, and a multi-variant missile program.

The Ansar Allah used Claude Code to develop software that controls and stabilizes flying vehicles, including integrating an open-source autopilot with a phone-class flight computer and running flight simulations. Anthropic also said the group test-fired a guided rocket.

Anthropic said its safeguards blocked many of the requests, but the group used methods to evade them, including hiding the purpose of the software and splitting work across multiple sessions.

The company said it subsequently banned the accounts involved and shared relevant information with public and private sector partners.
