Windows 11 Update Makes Microsoft Edge Faster Than Before
Microsoft has introduced a new Windows 11 feature that makes its Edge browser launch up to 33% faster, particularly when users are running multiple applications.
The feature, called Accelerated App Launch, improves how Windows opens applications that are already running in the background.
According to Microsoft, Edge launches approximately 15% faster under typical conditions, with improvements reaching 33% during heavy multitasking.
The feature is available starting with Microsoft Edge version 150 and the October 2026 Windows 11 non-security update, KB5127936.
How Accelerated App Launch Works
Normally, when users click a link or launch Microsoft Edge from the taskbar, Windows first checks whether the browser is already running.
This involves starting an additional process that searches for an existing Edge instance before opening the requested window.
Although the process is usually quick, it can introduce noticeable delays when a computer is running several applications simultaneously.
Accelerated App Launch removes this unnecessary step.
When Edge starts, it registers itself with Windows. The operating system can then communicate directly with the existing browser process the next time someone opens Edge.
This reduces the time required to display the browser window.
However, the improvement only applies when Edge is already running, either in an open window or through background features such as Startup Boost.
It does not provide the same performance improvement when launching Edge for the first time after a complete shutdown.
The feature supports launching Edge from the Start menu, taskbar, and compatible links.
Available With the Latest Windows 11 Update
Accelerated App Launch requires Microsoft Edge version 150 or newer and a compatible Windows 11 installation.
Microsoft says the feature supports Windows 11 versions 25H2, 26H1, and 26H2 with the October 2026 update or later.
The KB5127936 update is currently available as an optional non-security preview for supported Windows 11 versions.
Besides the browser improvement, the update introduces a redesigned File Explorer context menu and a Cloud Rebuild recovery feature.
Cloud Rebuild allows users to reinstall Windows using files downloaded from Windows Update, including in situations where the operating system cannot start normally.
Google Chrome and Other Browsers Could Get It Too
Microsoft Edge is currently the first browser to support Accelerated App Launch, but the company does not intend to keep the technology exclusive.
Microsoft is contributing the relevant changes to Chromium, the open-source browser project used by Edge, Google Chrome, Brave, and Vivaldi.
This means other Chromium-based browsers could eventually introduce similar improvements on Windows 11.
However, Microsoft has not confirmed when those browsers will support the feature.
The company is also exploring ways to use Accelerated App Launch for opening PDF files.
For now, Windows 11 users with the required updates can benefit from faster Edge launches, particularly when switching between applications or opening browser links during heavy multitasking.
