WhatsApp is rolling out new chat theme categories on Android, giving users more ways to customize the appearance of their conversations.
The update introduces five categories for chat themes along with a separate set of wallpaper categories. WhatsApp also automatically chooses bubble colors for each theme to keep messages readable.
The feature has been spotted in WhatsApp beta for Android 2.26.37.6 and is currently available to some beta testers.
Five Chat Theme Categories
WhatsApp is bringing the same theme structure already introduced on iOS to Android.
The new categories include Featured, Nature, Live, Minimal and Doodle.
Featured collects selected themes from the other categories. Nature includes wallpapers featuring outdoor scenes such as deserts, forests, mountains, and coastal landscapes.
The Live category introduces animated wallpapers that move slowly in the background.
Minimal offers simpler designs without patterns or distracting elements, while Doodle brings back the familiar patterned style associated with WhatsApp’s traditional wallpaper.
Wallpapers Get Separate Categories
WhatsApp is also reorganizing its wallpaper section.
Users can select a wallpaper without applying a complete chat theme and choose from the same categories available in the theme section.
The app is also adding Vibrant and Gradient wallpaper categories.
Vibrant includes brighter and more colorful backgrounds, while Gradient uses smooth transitions between colors.
Users can still select an image from their own gallery or create a wallpaper using AI.
Animated Wallpapers Added
The Live category appears in both the chat theme and wallpaper sections.
These wallpapers use slow animations designed to add movement without making conversations difficult to read.
WhatsApp intentionally keeps the animations subtle because faster movement could affect readability and accessibility.
Animated wallpapers also display a small badge on their thumbnail so users can identify them before applying one.
Automatic Bubble Colors
WhatsApp now automatically selects a message bubble color based on the chosen theme or wallpaper.
The system is designed to maintain enough contrast between the text and background.
Users do not need to change the bubble color manually, although WhatsApp still allows them to select a different color if they prefer.
Gradual Rollout
The new chat themes are currently rolling out to some Android beta testers through the Google Play Store.
Not every beta user will receive them immediately because WhatsApp is releasing the feature gradually over the coming weeks.
Some users on the stable version of WhatsApp may also receive the new themes, but WhatsApp has not announced when they will become available to everyone.
