Trump Reportedly Captured Venezuela President on Grok’s Advice
U.S. President Donald Trump reportedly consulted Elon Musk’s Grok chatbot about Venezuela weeks before American forces captured President Nicolás Maduro, according to a report by Time.
The discussion reportedly took place during a private meeting between Trump and Musk in December 2025, around a month before the U.S. operation in Venezuela.
Trump Asked Grok About Maduro
According to a source cited by Time, Trump spent hours asking Grok questions about different topics, including Venezuela.
At one point, Trump reportedly asked how Venezuelans would react if the United States captured Maduro.
Grok reportedly responded that Maduro was deeply unpopular and that many Venezuelans would likely celebrate his removal.
The meeting came during a period of escalating tensions between Washington and Caracas, including U.S. military strikes against boats the Trump administration alleged were involved in drug trafficking.
U.S. forces captured Maduro on January 3, 2026. Celebrations subsequently took place among some Venezuelans and Venezuelan communities abroad.
Time reported that Trump came away impressed by Grok’s response.
There is no public evidence showing that Grok itself determined Trump’s decision to authorize the operation. The reporting only indicates that Trump consulted the chatbot before the raid and considered its assessment useful.
Grok’s Role in U.S. Defense Is Growing
The report comes as artificial intelligence plays a larger role inside the U.S. government and military.
Grok has reportedly been used for defense-related work, while other AI companies, including OpenAI and Anthropic, also have relationships with the U.S. government involving approved military and government applications.
The Pentagon has also named Musk, Anduril founder Palmer Luckey, and former House Speaker Newt Gingrich to co-lead Project Meridian, an initiative examining how advanced technologies could be used on future battlefields.
The group has been given 120 days to recommend technologies and systems that could be developed, tested and deployed by the U.S. military.
