A new study suggests that weight-loss injections such as Ozempic and Wegovy may help reduce sudden and severe asthma attacks.
British scientists said semaglutide, a GLP-1 receptor agonist used to treat diabetes and support weight loss, could lower the risk of dangerous worsening of asthma symptoms.
Researchers also said earlier studies had hinted that these medicines may have anti-inflammatory effects and could improve lung-related outcomes.
The study was led by Chloe Bloom, who said GLP-1 receptor agonists are already widely used for type 2 diabetes and obesity. She noted that the medicines may have broader benefits beyond their current uses.
Researchers reviewed UK electronic medical records and carried out four separate studies. Each study included about 20,000 to 22,000 people who had either started GLP-1 treatment or were using sulfonylurea, another diabetes drug.
The findings showed that people with asthma and COPD who were prescribed GLP-1 medicines had fewer asthma attacks and fewer sudden worsening episodes of COPD compared with people taking other diabetes medicines.
Bloom, who is associated with Imperial College London’s National Heart and Lung Institute, said the effect was most noticeable with semaglutide. In asthma patients, its use was linked with about a 40 percent reduction in asthma attacks.
Researchers said the results point to a possible link between GLP-1 medicines and respiratory diseases. However, they stressed that more research is needed to determine whether these drugs are safe and effective as asthma treatments.
