Speaker Balochistan Assembly Rejects Resolution Against Sardari System

A resolution seeking the immediate abolition of the Sardari system in Balochistan and a ban on the use of the titles Sardar and Nawab was disposed of in the provincial assembly on Monday.

The resolution was moved by Jamaat-i-Islami MPA Hidayatur Rehman Baloch. However, Speaker retired Captain Abdul Khaliq Achakzai informed the house that a review of the legal and judicial record showed legislation abolishing the Sardari system had already been passed and implemented in 1976, applying to the entire country.

The speaker also noted that the Balochistan High Court had issued decisions on the Sardari system, which were upheld by the Federal Constitutional Court on March 6 this year. In view of the existing legal and judicial position, the speaker disposed of the resolution.

An exchange of taunts followed between Mr Rehman and Opposition Leader Mir Younis Aziz Zehri, with treasury members speaking in support of the opposition leader.

Parliamentary Secretary Agha Umer Ahmedzai said the Sardari system had existed for thousands of years, arguing it was not for an individual to declare the entire system wrong. Parliamentary Secretary Nawabzada Zarain Khan Magsi said the matter should not be discussed further as the resolution had been disposed of.

The speaker said Mr Rehman’s point should be heard, as the JI MPA was seeking implementation of the legislation enacted to abolish the Sardari system. However, the session was adjourned until November 10 due to a lack of quorum.
