Karachi woke up on Wednesday to a strong and unpleasant smell that spread across several neighborhoods, including Clifton, DHA, Korangi, PECHS, MA Jinnah Road, Tower and Kharadar.
Marine experts said the odor did not come from a leak or pollution incident. They said a seasonal marine process caused the smell as phytoplankton and other marine vegetation died and decomposed in coastal waters after thriving during the monsoon.
WWF-Pakistan Technical Adviser Muhammad Moazzam Khan said the phenomenon usually appears toward the end of the monsoon season when changing wind and water conditions cause microscopic marine plants to die naturally.
Their decomposition produces a foul smell that can drift inland.
Experts also said weak sea breezes allowed the odor to remain over the city for longer than usual. The Pakistan Meteorological Department said the breeze stayed weak through much of Wednesday before picking up in the evening.
Meteorologists expect stronger sea breezes from Thursday, which should help clear the smell from the city.
