Russia Denies More Plague Related Deaths
Russia has dismissed reports of a second plague-related death in Siberia and rejected claims of an outbreak, urging the public to rely on information from official health authorities.
Kremlin spokesperson Dmitry Peskov said much of the information circulating in the media was incorrect when asked about the alleged second death. He directed people to statements issued by Russia’s health watchdog, Rospotrebnadzor, for reliable updates.
The concerns emerged following the death of Darya Shipilova, a 28-year-old employee at an anti-plague research institute in Siberia. She died last Friday from pneumonia, although the underlying cause was not immediately established.
Reports following her death suggested that around 200 people had been quarantined as a precaution while authorities checked for possible infections.
The incident also drew international attention, with the World Health Organization seeking further information from Russia about the circumstances of her death.
Russian health officials have ruled out the risk of a plague outbreak. Authorities have also rejected reports of another death linked to the disease.
Shipilova’s death has not been confirmed as a plague case, and a definitive connection between her illness and the infection remains unestablished. Claims of further plague-related deaths or a wider outbreak should therefore not be treated as confirmed developments.
