Rabies Deaths in Sindh Rise to 40 This Year

The number of rabies-related deaths in Sindh has reached 40 this year after a man in his 70s died at Jinnah Postgraduate Medical Centre (JPMC) in Karachi.

According to officials, the victim, a resident of Baldia Town, was bitten by a dog more than three weeks ago but did not seek preventive treatment.

JPMC has reported over 11,000 dog bite cases and 10 rabies-related deaths so far this year, including the latest fatality.

The death follows two recent cases involving a 38-year-old man from Diplo in Tharparkar and a 12-year-old boy from Hyderabad, both of whom died from rabies.

Health experts say many cases remain unreported as some patients rely on home remedies or faith healers instead of seeking medical treatment. They have called for greater public awareness, humane measures to control the dog population, and better access to treatment at hospitals.

Although dog bites are the leading cause of rabies infections, the virus can also spread through bites from infected wild animals.

Experts warn that rabies is almost always fatal once symptoms develop. However, immediate wound cleaning, timely vaccination, and rabies immunoglobulin when needed can prevent the disease after exposure.
