Punjab Education Minister Rana Sikandar Hayat has announced strict action against teachers whose schools record poor matriculation results, saying the government will dismiss teachers at schools with pass rates of 20 percent or lower without issuing show-cause notices.
Speaking at a press conference at the Directorate General Public Relations (DGPR) on Friday, Hayat said he accepted responsibility for the Class 9 and 10 results but stressed the need for accountability.
The minister said recent board reforms, transparency measures and efforts to eliminate cheating mafias had affected pass percentages. However, he said Punjab had improved overall education standards during the past two years.
He added that authorities recorded no cheating or paper leaks at any examination center this year. Hayat said Punjab updated and shortened the Class 9 curriculum this year to bring it in line with global standards. The province also tested on-screen marking and will implement the system fully next year.
Boards also marked practical examinations at the board level for the first time. The minister said the government would form a committee to review the results and had identified 2,200 schools with pass rates of 20 percent or lower.
He said the government would dismiss teachers at these schools and reward teachers who achieve strong results. Hayat highlighted the performance of outsourced schools, which recorded an overall 81 percent pass rate, as evidence of differences in teacher performance.
He also rejected reports of declining enrollment in public colleges and universities, saying admissions had increased significantly this year and official records supported the figures.
