Punjab Sets Up 15 Modern Water Quality Monitoring Stations

Punjab’s Environment Protection Department has installed 15 modern water quality monitoring stations to track pollution in rivers, canals, drains, and other surface water sources across the province.

The stations send water quality data to a central control room every hour, helping authorities detect changes in pollution levels and identify potential sources of contamination.

The project prioritizes major water systems, including the Ravi, Chenab, Jhelum, and Sutlej rivers. Equipment installed at the stations measures water quality and flow, while integrated systems store and transmit the readings.

According to official documents, the project was initially approved at approximately Rs. 600 million. Its cost was revised to around Rs. 2.97 billion in November 2024.

Launched under the World Bank-supported Punjab Green Development Program, the project originally targeted activation of all 15 stations by May 2025 but faced delays.

Environmental monitoring official Noor Ahmad said installations include the Ravi siphon, downstream of Hudiara Drain, and headworks. He added that the imported systems were being calibrated for local conditions and their data was being checked. Readings will appear on the central dashboard following third-party clearance.

WWF-Pakistan’s water affairs director, Sohail Ahmad Naqvi, welcomed the initiative and urged the government to make the data publicly accessible, similar to air quality readings, to support transparency and pollution control.
