Punjab Police Asked to Nominate Officers for Specialized UN Training

The United Nations Office on Drugs and Crime (UNODC) has asked Punjab Police to nominate four officers for specialized training on combating human trafficking and migrant smuggling, with appropriate representation of female personnel.

The News reported that UNODC’s Pakistan office sent the request through an official communication to Punjab Police.

The planned training in Lahore will focus on modern techniques for detecting and intercepting trafficking and migrant smuggling activities.

Designed for frontline officers, the training aims to improve their ability to identify, prevent, and respond to these crimes. It will also cover practical techniques for recognising vulnerable people and strengthening police responses.

UNODC sought the nominations in advance to arrange logistics and complete administrative requirements under applicable UN rules and regulations.

According to the report, a UNODC representative said the organisation was helping relevant law enforcement agencies build their capacity to counter trafficking in persons and the smuggling of migrants. The training forms part of that ongoing work.

Frontline police officers often encounter victims, suspected traffickers, facilitators and vulnerable migrants before other authorities. The initiative aims to strengthen their ability to recognise these situations and respond effectively.

The report places the initiative against broader concerns about organised criminal networks involved in human trafficking and irregular migration. Pakistan’s geographical position linking South Asia with the Middle East and Europe presents challenges in addressing both crimes.

UNODC has also worked with Pakistani law enforcement agencies and government institutions to improve investigations, strengthen criminal justice responses, and support coordination against transnational organised crime.
