Punjab Approves Rs. 1 Billion for Lahore Sports Venues Ahead of SAF Games

The Punjab government has approved an estimated Rs1 billion to upgrade four facilities at Lahore’s Nishtar Park Sports Complex ahead of the South Asian Federation (SAF) Games, scheduled for April 3–11, 2027.

The facilities will be brought up to international standards as Lahore prepares to host 10 sporting disciplines. Work on the required venues has already started, according to a senior government official.

The government has also rejected a proposal by Federal Planning Minister Ahsan Iqbal to hold some events at the Narowal Sports Complex.

The official said the Punjab Sports Board advised against the move after reviewing accommodation, security and transport arrangements. Its concerns included a shortage of suitable lodging for international athletes and Narowal’s proximity to the Indian border.

The board also warned that transporting athletes between Lahore and Narowal daily could create additional security and logistical challenges. Punjab’s allocated events are therefore being planned around Lahore’s facilities.

Islamabad is scheduled to host 15 sporting disciplines, but venue upgrades there had not begun, the official said.

The Rs1 billion approved for Nishtar Park Sports Complex is an initial estimate rather than a fixed final cost. Actual spending could rise or fall depending on the requirements identified during the upgrade work.
