Punjab Chief Minister Maryam Nawaz has formally approved a new school curriculum aimed at reducing the burden of textbooks and shifting students away from rote learning.
The decision was taken during a special meeting on education reforms in Lahore, where officials presented the curriculum prepared by the Punjab Education Curriculum, Training and Assessment Authority (PECTAA).
The new curriculum covers English, Mathematics, Social Studies, Urdu and Early Childhood Education. Officials said the number of books will be reduced by 25 percent, while textbooks will feature QR codes linking students to video lessons on relevant topics.
Maryam Nawaz also directed officials to develop an AI curriculum for students from Grade 1 to Grade 12 and complete textbook printing before March.
The meeting also approved mental health training for teachers and reached a consensus on legislation to eliminate corporal punishment in schools. A proposal to appoint visiting psychologists in every district was also reviewed, while online counseling facilities for students were proposed.
Saturdays will be designated for teacher training, with textbook authors expected to conduct the sessions.
CM Punjab said the government aims to establish an improved education model in Punjab’s public schools, with greater focus on AI, digital literacy, laboratories and primary education. She also said English-language training for 35,000 teachers across 31 tehsils in 12 districts had been completed.
