The Pakistan Telecommunication Authority (PTA) has issued district-level class licences to 300 companies to provide internet services, with the aim of expanding broadband connectivity and promoting fibre deployment in underserved areas of Pakistan.
According to PTA officials, most of the licences issued in recent months cover districts in Khyber Pakhtunkhwa.
The initiative is expected to improve internet access, strengthen digital connectivity and accelerate fibre deployment, particularly in remote and less-connected areas.
The district-level class licence is valid for 10 years. Applicants are required to pay a one-time initial licence fee of Rs. 300,000, along with an annual licence fee of Rs. 100,000 for the first year.
Under the licensing conditions, small and medium-sized businesses can provide internet services within a single district. PTA will issue only one district-level licence to each entity.
Licence holders must launch commercial services within one year of receiving the licence.
Licensed companies will also be required to register at least 100 broadband subscribers during their first year of operations.
Internet service providers operating under the framework must obtain their bandwidth from duly licensed operators to ensure regulatory compliance and service reliability.
