Power Division Says It Saved Nation From High Electricity Bills
Pakistan’s Power Division says it saved electricity consumers from a potential fuel price adjustment of Rs. 5 to Rs. 6 per unit in September, limiting the expected increase to Rs. 2.56 per unit through targeted load management and cheaper fuel arrangements.
The division said these measures prevented an additional burden of up to Rs. 3.44 per unit on consumers. The total impact of September’s fuel price adjustment is estimated at Rs. 32.7 billion.
According to the Power Division, authorities carried out limited load management for around two to two-and-a-half hours during September to reduce electricity generation using expensive furnace oil and high-speed diesel.
The government also supplied imported liquefied natural gas (LNG) for power generation at domestic gas rates, reducing costs by Rs. 0.83 per unit, the statement said.
The September fuel price adjustment is expected to be Rs. 1.45 per unit higher than August’s adjustment.
The Power Division attributed the pressure on electricity generation costs to rising global oil prices, which crossed $120 per barrel amid a regional dispute. Crude oil was estimated at around $70 per barrel when the existing base electricity tariff was determined.
Pakistan continued efforts to secure re-gasified liquefied natural gas (RLNG) through available contractual supplies and additional spot cargoes despite Qatar declaring force majeure, the division said.
It warned that further RLNG shortages could force power producers to rely more heavily on expensive furnace oil and high-speed diesel, increasing generation costs.
The division added that the combined impact of fuel price and quarterly tariff adjustments from January to August 2026 limited the additional burden on consumers to Rs. 0.65 per unit. This was equivalent to a 1.9 percent increase over the base electricity tariff during the period.
It also said a package encouraging additional electricity consumption by industrial and agricultural users had helped increase the use of power from the national grid.
