PM to Review Country’s Gas Situation Today

The Ministry of Petroleum will brief Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif on the country’s gas situation, including a 7 review of gas availability for domestic consumers, power sector requirements and the need for imported liquefied natural gas (RLNG), official sources said.

The briefing will also cover prevailing international gas prices and the country’s overall supply and demand position, sources added.

The ministry is expected to inform the prime minister about RLNG requirements, particularly for meeting power sector demand, alongside gas availability for households.

The briefing will provide an overview of the country’s gas needs and supply position, including the role of imported gas in meeting domestic and electricity generation requirements.

The government is preparing a winter gas load management plan for November 2026 to February 2027, with domestic consumers set to receive priority for locally produced gas. The proposal includes concentrating household supplies during peak cooking hours, while RLNG would be prioritized for power generation and industry.

Gas demand is expected to rise sharply during winter, with demand on the SNGPL network projected to double from around 550 million cubic feet per day (mmcfd) to 1,100 mmcfd, while SSGC demand could increase from 300 mmcfd to 500 mmcfd.

The Petroleum Division has estimated that 24 LNG cargoes may be required to meet winter needs, including nine for power generation and 15 for domestic consumers, with two of the latter serving as contingency supplies. However, uncertainty over Qatari deliveries and the high cost of spot-market purchases have complicated procurement, and the plan is still awaiting approval
