Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif has announced the activation of a free lunch program to ensure proper nutrition for students.
He also ordered urgent reforms in Islamabad’s government schools, covering infrastructure, curriculum, teacher training and student facilities.
The prime minister issued these directives while chairing a high-level meeting on improving the quality of education in the federal capital. He instructed Federal Minister for Planning, Development and Special Initiatives Ahsan Iqbal to ensure that all identified issues were resolved within the stipulated timeframe.
Shehbaz Sharif directed the authorities to mobilize available resources to address infrastructure problems on an emergency basis. He stressed that the government must provide students with a safe and suitable learning environment.
He also ordered the installation of smart boards in all government schools as soon as possible to improve teaching and learning facilities. In addition, he called for a comprehensive strategy to transform the Federal Directorate of Education into a more effective and efficient institution.
The prime minister emphasized that government school teachers should focus solely on teaching and educational activities rather than performing unrelated duties. He also directed the authorities to ensure that all teacher recruitment takes place strictly on merit.
To improve access to education, Shehbaz Sharif called for expanding the government school bus service. He also ordered the outsourcing of student transportation services, subject to third-party validation.
Furthermore, the prime minister directed officials to promote solar energy in government schools, install ramps in all institutions to facilitate students with physical disabilities, and provide quality medical facilities.
During the meeting, officials reported that most government schools in Islamabad already had basic facilities, including internet connectivity, clean drinking water and computer laboratories. However, the survey had identified infrastructure-related problems in some institutions.
Officials also informed the meeting that 278 government buses were operating across Islamabad to transport students attending government schools.
