Sony is exploring a new way for PlayStation users to pay for games and other digital content by simply tapping a phone or payment card against the controller.
A newly published patent describes a PlayStation controller that could receive payment information from nearby devices and pass it to the connected console.
The patent, titled “Video Game Controller-Driven Information Transfer,” was filed in March 2025 and published on September 17, 2026. It describes the use of technologies such as NFC and Bluetooth to connect the controller with a phone, card or other device.
Under the new system, a player could receive a payment prompt on the PlayStation and then tap a phone, credit card or gift card against the controller. The payment information would then be transferred to the console for processing.
Sony also mentions digital wallets, bank accounts and gift cards as possible payment methods. The technology could potentially be used for game purchases, in-game content and gaming credits.
Players could also transfer account information, connect to multiplayer sessions, or move screenshots and gameplay clips between a console and phone.
This is only a patent application at this stage. Sony has not announced plans to add the feature to the PS5, PS6 or any existing PlayStation controller.
The current PS5 DualSense controller does not have the NFC hardware described in the patent. A future controller will likely have one.
