The United States Educational Foundation in Pakistan (USEFP) has opened applications for the 2027 Fulbright Scholar Program, offering Pakistani academics and researchers an opportunity to spend up to 10 months at a U.S. college or university.
The U.S. government-funded program supports lectureship, postdoctoral research, or a combination of teaching and research. Selected scholars will work with U.S. academic institutions while building professional and research connections.
Pakistani scholars selected for the program will also be expected to share information about Pakistan’s society and culture with students, colleagues, and community groups in the United States.
After returning home, scholars are expected to share their U.S. experiences with students, colleagues, and communities in Pakistan.

Who Can Apply?
The program is open to Pakistani citizens who are residing and working in Pakistan. Applicants must hold a Ph.D. or terminal degree in their field and, according to the 2027 announcement, the degree must have been held for at least two years.
USEFP has also identified two broad groups of applicants. Early-career faculty and researchers with 2 to 7 years of post-Ph.D. experience can apply, along with senior scholars who have 8 to 15 years of post-Ph.D. experience.
Scholars from all academic disciplines can apply, while clinical medicine is excluded from the program. USEFP’s general Fulbright Scholar requirements also state that successful applicants should have a strong command of written and spoken English. The program does not require a separate English proficiency test.
What the Fulbright Grant Covers
The Fulbright Scholar grant provides financial support for scholars during their stay in the United States. The grant covers airfare, an incidental research allowance, a living stipend, and health insurance.
USEFP also provides funding for one accompanying dependent and assists selected scholars with the visa application process. Other accompanying dependents may travel with the scholar, but the program does not provide funding for them.
Research and Teaching Opportunities
Selected scholars can use the grant period for postdoctoral research, university-level teaching, or both, depending on their proposed project and placement.
Applicants need to clearly explain what they plan to accomplish in the United States and how the proposed work connects to their professional activities in Pakistan. USEFP describes the proposal as the most important part of the application. Applicants seeking a lectureship should also demonstrate their university-level teaching experience and ability.
The program also allows Pakistani scholars to work with U.S. academic peers and take part in academic and community activities. These exchange activities form an important part of the Fulbright experience.

Important Eligibility Conditions
Applicants should check the program’s restrictions before starting the application. USEFP states that people who completed their Ph.D. within the previous two years are not eligible.
Those who have been to the United States for research or another long-term educational opportunity within the last five years are also ineligible. Other exclusions apply to people with dual U.S.-Pakistan nationality, certain immediate family connections to U.S. citizens or permanent residents, and employees of the Fulbright organization or the U.S. Department of State.
People already studying in the United States or holding a work or residence visa in another country are also excluded.
AI Use and Application Integrity
The 2027 application announcement specifically warns applicants against using generative artificial intelligence software to write the application essay.
USEFP also warns that plagiarism, fraudulent publications, or other forms of misrepresentation can result in disqualification at any stage of the program.
Applicants should therefore prepare their essays and supporting material themselves and provide accurate information throughout the application.
