Pakistan Secures Safe Passage Through Strait of Hormuz for Qatari LNG Shipment
Pakistan has secured safe passage through the Strait of Hormuz for another liquefied natural gas shipment from Qatar after reaching an arrangement with Iran, providing some relief as the country faces an energy shortfall.
The LNG tanker, which loaded its cargo at Qatar’s Ras Laffan facility in late June, crossed the Strait of Hormuz over the weekend and is expected to reach Pakistan’s LNG import facility by Tuesday, according to ship tracking data.
People familiar with the matter said the passage was negotiated between government officials. The delivery would mark the second Qatari LNG shipment to reach Pakistan this month through the strategically important waterway.
LNG shipments through the Strait of Hormuz remain heavily disrupted, although some vessels have continued to pass through the waterway. Pakistan has been using its relationship with Iran to secure several LNG cargoes since strikes began in late February, as it seeks to avoid rolling blackouts.
Pakistan had considered holding a tender for a spot LNG purchase if the Qatari shipment failed to pass through the strait. A successful delivery would allow the government to avoid another purchase from the spot market, where LNG prices have risen to their highest level since 2022.
Pakistan received nearly all of its LNG from Qatar last year. Qatar is home to the world’s largest LNG export facility, but only a very small volume of LNG is currently being shipped through the Strait of Hormuz, according to Qatar’s Energy Minister Saad Sherida Al Kaabi.
