Pakistan Raises Wheat Support Price by Rs. 1,000, But Farmers Want More

Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif has approved an indicative wheat support price of Rs. 4,500 per maund for 2027, an increase of Rs. 1,000 from last year’s Rs. 3,500.

The proposed rate remains Rs. 500 below the price demanded by farmers. According to a Prime Minister’s Office statement, the increase aims to provide relief to growers facing higher production costs, rising fuel prices and inflation.

Shehbaz said the decision was intended to encourage wheat cultivation, help farmers recover their input costs and earn a reasonable profit, while strengthening food security and supporting domestic production.

The prime minister also acknowledged the cooperation of the provincial governments of Punjab and Sindh during consultations on the price.

National Food Security Minister Rana Tanveer Hussain separately said the federal government would coordinate with the provinces to establish a uniform wheat price. He said farmers had received low prices for their wheat and expressed hope that market prices would decline within days.

The minister added that the federal government had reserved one million metric tons of wheat and issued directives to preserve the stocks. He said provincial governments were responsible for bringing wheat to market.
